MetLife Stadium Wins Coveted Venue of the Year Award in Dublin
The Venue of the Year award is not easily attainable. It is awarded to the world’s best stadium, arena or sports venue, based on outstanding performance over a 12 month period. Past winners include Staples Center and Mercedes Benz Superdome. This year’s finalists included France’s Parc Olympique Lyonnais and Turkey’s Vodafone Arena.
Although MetLife Stadium’s operations are considered excellent every year, 2016 was even more impressive. As the home of the New York Giants and Jets, and the host of Super Bowl XLVIII, the stadium just had its busiest year since opening in 2010.
In 2016, the stadium hit a record of 41 major non-NFL events, 210 special events that drew nearly 3 million fans, and 11 concerts (more than any other stadium in the United States).
To host 61 major events successfully in one year, MetLife Stadium had to achieve a high level of efficiency and coordination. This was clearly demonstrated when they completed a full changeover from Jets to Giants in less than nine hours, with the additional challenge of a snowstorm.
Due to their hard work, MetLife Stadium has won other awards over the past year:
- “Top Stop of the Year” by Venues Today
- “#1 Stadium in the World” by Billboard magazine for the fifth straight year
How Matrax Helped MetLife Stadium Become Venue of the Year
MetLife Stadium needed a superior temporary flooring system to handle the challenges associated with hosting a variety of non-football events each year. The composite flooring system they required had to meet the following qualifications:
- Quick, easy installment and removal
- Effective protection and preservation of the synthetic turf or natural grass underneath
- Support for heavy-duty vehicles to safely drive on and over the turf
When MetLife Stadium tried out other field covering systems, none of them met their expectations. In the past, the trailers had to be unloaded in the parking lot and the components of the stage (for concerts) shuttled in on smaller lighter duty vehicles. This was costly and slowed down the event transition process.
We introduced MetLife Stadium to our turnkey temporary flooring system and they have been using it ever since. Our system, featuring our 4×4 Composite Mats, provided MetLife Stadium with a solution for all of their challenges. Our composite turf protection system excels at the following:
- Protecting synthetic field turf and promoting natural grass growth for up to 14 days
- Providing easy installation, storage, and transportation
- Supporting heavy vehicular traffic during the construction of stages and lighting systems
Matrax used a 4-man crew to install MetLife Stadium’s field covering system at a rate of 100,000 square feet in 8 hours. Once the crew finished installing the field covering system, they conducted vehicular load testing before turning the project over to the stadium’s crew to begin construction for the event.
Our composite turf protection system has been used at other popular venues, including the National Mall in Washington DC, M&T Bank Stadium, Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium, and Gillette Stadium. It has also been used internationally in Italy, Japan, Canada and the UK.
We are so proud of the MetLife Stadium team for winning this award and we feel honored to have been a small part of it.
