Matrax Participates in Turf Study for the National Mall

During the summer and fall of 2010 Matrax and others from the industry participated in a turf study conducted by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences whose purpose was to understand the effects of placing a range of coverings and matting products overtop of natural turf, specifically for the National Mall.

“Throughout the year special interest groups erect tents and stages covering the tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea)-mixed cool-season grass lawn on the National Mall.” During the set up and tear down of these events, the grassy areas of the mall are subjected to tremendous amounts of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Over the years this type of traffic has taken its toll on the area,” the combined stresses result in turf death, reducing the aesthetics and functionality of this important public space. Many new commercially available products have reached the market in recent years and have the potential to extend the period that turf can be covered and still achieve functional recover,” Matrax is one of them. The US government plans to rehabilitate the national mall and will be mandating that approved turf protection products are used during these events.

The VA Tech study will continue for another year so that results can be compiled for two full seasons. What was concluded after one year of testing is that during the summer months, Matrax 4×4 Composite can be in place for up to 8 days before turf recovery was considered unacceptable. During the fall portion, the test concluded that Matrax 4×4 Composite can be left in place for up to 28 days before recovery of the turf became unacceptable. The study also notes that because of the design characteristics of the Matrax 4×4 Composite it will not sink into the turf causing damage, due to heavy loading or high moisture content in the soil caused by rain, unlike some of the other products tested. It can also be concluded then that even under the driest conditions, Matrax 4×4 Composite will outperform the competition because it distributes loads evenly, eliminating damage caused by soil compaction and creasing of the turf.

Matrax Inc. is committed to developing and manufacturing products that provide solutions to specific ground cover requirements. No other product on the market today has the combination of load carrying capacity and turf friendly characteristics of Matrax 4×4 Composite. It does not stop there, based on what the company has learned from the VA Tech testing and with the help of some advances in technology; we have developed and will continue to develop state of the art turf protection products.

The Matrax line of site access and turf protection products is manufactured with pride in the U.S.A and is available for shipment around the world. Please contact Joe Wright, Chief Operating Officer, Matrax Inc. @ 973-223-6779 or visit our website for more information.
